Cooke Varotal 18-100 — saved with custom-made parts and all-new roller bearings.
It arrived with play in the mount, image shift while zooming, and an artificially limited zoom range. Someone had clearly made a brave attempt at repairing it before — and this is genuinely one of the trickiest zooms to get right — but a few of those fixes were masking the underlying faults rather than solving them.
Machined 17 complete new roller bearing assemblies with new miniature precision bearings, replacing all the originals. The rollers are turned from a high-performance engineering polymer normally found in aerospace applications — extremely dimensionally stable and wear-resistant, ideal for zoom mechanics where every micron of roller geometry translates directly into image steadiness. One of the old rollers turned out to be cracked — the cause of the image shift.
Also CNC-machined a new PTFE cam follower, made new custom screws and other small parts. Serviced the mount and sub-mount until perfectly solid and straight. Traced the limited zoom range to an incorrectly indexed zoom cam — corrected it and removed the artificial stop added in an earlier repair. Full parfocal recalibration on the collimator. Cleaned elements and mechanics throughout.
Ready for many more years of service.

Zeiss Standard 180mm 2.8. Iris glued together using oil. Lots of it. Lucky none of the pins snapped.
Now its clean and ready to serve again. Front ring was also damaged from some kind of fall so getting to the iris was impossible but I ”de-dinged” the front ring so lens could be disassembled.
Always a good feeling when a lens is saved. 😀

New Blazar Remus x1.5 anamorphics in for a check before going out on project. Honestly surprised by their small size yet solid feeling. They cover full frame and the 33mm is quit fast. Will be very interesting to see how they hold up after this project is finished.

Serviced this Cooke 25-250 mkII from 1983. Every part of it was cleaned and some parts made new. Its now ready for a second life.
This lens has some very unusual mechanical designs but also the smoothest focus I have ever touched. At least after some tinkering and modifications 😄

Finished the new 156mm, S35 front rings for Cooke Varotal 20-100. The amazing classic cine zoom from 1971.
The rings were calculated and designed in Cad. Then a prototype was made and tested. After that some extra rings were made from 7075 aluminum and then hard anodized and colored black. Lastly the engravings were filled with color. These rings will last a lifetime.

Making new custom front rings for the classic A35 Cooke 20-100 zoom from 1971.
These rings gives a new standard 156mm front, protects the glass AND allows for S35 use since it has no vignetting at all. I just sent them all off to be anodized and colored black. Once I get them back they will get color filled engravings.
If you need a ring I have a couple of them ready.
Its a great way to be able to use this very nice vintage Cooke zoom on a modern sensor/camera.
Fujinon 18-85 T2 monster zoom in for minor service and scale change.
Some say this is ”the best zoom”. Heavy beast for sure.
Extremely high build quality and the tolerances are very tight.
